Back in the day (OK like a few months ago), when we made the decision to combine BestDynamikSkins.com, WPTriggers.com, IWillTeachYouCatalyst.com and a few other domains we needed to create a new name.
A new name that would inspire others to pay attention.
A new name that would be the one unified place for all the web design related information we wanted to share.
So follow along on this journey to domain name perfection.
STEP 1: Brainstorm what you are all about
So we sat down and started brainstorming what we wanted this new thing to be.
Obviously web design (because that’s really the only thing we are good at).
But there are so many more things that go into living life as a web designer than just the technical aspects of designing a website.
It’s about being a web designer, not just designing a website.
It’s about all the fun stuff / the crappy stuff / the exciting stuff and the boring stuff that comes along with that choice and we want to share it with the world.
Sharing what we know with others!
After this lightbulb went off we realized that we wanted to be able to share our knowledge with other web designers all over the world (or people thinking about becoming one).
We realized that means we were going to be teaching our skills to others.
We were going to be teachers.
We are going to help other people learn how we do what we do.
We thought about where teachers do their teaching.
Teachers usually teach in a classroom or school? Right?
So we need a domain name that has something to do with learning or school and web design.
TIP: Try and answer the questions = Who? What? Where? How?
STEP 2: Brainstorm keywords that describe what you are about
Let’s do this!
We opened up our Evernote, created a new note and started typing keywords that described what we were planning on doing/being.
Here is our actual list copied out from Evernote:
- Web Design
- Web Sites
- Web Designer
- Web Designers
- High School
- Website Design
Now that we’ve got our list of keywords, now it’s time to search for a domain name.
STEP 3: Use clever domain name tools
We weren’t sure exactly what words would pair best with others, so we recruited some help from some clever tools.
Here are 7 tools to help you create domain names (listed in no particular order)
We went to those sites and entered in some of our keywords and came up with HUNDREDS of domain names.
STEP 4: Bulk search for available domain names
We register all our domain names with GoDaddy (and you should too).
They have a clever tool that allows you to search for domain names in bulk!
To find this awesome feature visit GoDaddy.com, move your mouse over Domains and click on Bulk Domain Search.
There you’ll see a big box.
In that box you enter in all the domain names that you want to see if they are available to buy or not.
So we pasted in our HUNDREDS of domain name ideas into that box and hit search!
Want to know what we found?
We were left with these 41 available domain names.
STEP 5: Pick the best domain name
This was about to be a big moment.
Sitting in our living room, we slowly read each one.
Some didn’t make any sense.
Some didn’t sound good.
Some were just stupid.
But there was one that flowed, one that made us slowly nod our heads up and down when we said it to each other.
That one was the winner.
That one was (as you can guess) WebDesignersAcademy.com
